Soap Nut & Rosemary Laundry Detergent

Healthy Living on a Budget Tip #4

Make your own laundry detergent. Store bought detergents contain quite the laundry list of ingredients (and chemicals). Sure they might get our clothes clean, but ew, we wear those chemicals practically 24 hours a day. It’s easier (and cheaper) than you think to make your own. Let me show you how :)

Ingredients:

6 soap nuts

2 cups of water

Directions:

Boil on the stove

Smash up the soap nuts (a bean masher works great). This helps extract the soap.

Simmer for 30 minutes and let cool.

Pour the liquid into a bottle. Squeeze every last drop out of those soap nuts.

Add 10 drops of rosemary essential oil (this is the preservative).

Use:

Use 1-2 tablespoons per load. The detergent lasts approximately a week and a half unrefrigerated, a few weeks refrigerated, or freeze it in ice cube trays and toss 1-2 in the washer per load.

Enjoy :)
